Parishes have a rich and varied history that dates back to ancient times. The concept of a parish, as a geographical and ecclesiastical entity, originated in the Roman Empire. The term ‘parish’ comes from the Greek word ‘paroikia’, meaning ‘sojourning in a foreign land’.

During the Middle Ages, throughout Europe, the parish system became more structured. Parishes were not only religious communities but also civil jurisdictions with responsibilities such as maintaining roads and caring for the poor.

The Parish was often the heart of community life. It was a place for social gatherings. Parish boundaries were important too. They defined who was responsible for maintaining local infrastructure and providing for those in need.

Over time, parishes have evolved and adapted to societal changes. Yet, they continue to play a vital role in many communities around the world. Today’s parishes are often vibrant hubs of religious, social, and cultural activity, continuing a tradition that has its roots in ancient history.
